A man from Portales dies after being beaten by several minors on June 5
PORTALES, NM (KFDA) – A Portales man who was beaten by miners on June 5 had died of his injuries Tuesday evening.
According to The Eastern New Mexico News, James Roper, 37, was beaten after a confrontation with five minors behind a convenience store on West Second Street in Portales.
According to court documents, the incident began with a discussion involving a cellphone.
A minor was arrested and charged with aggravated bodily harm.
He is being held in a Bernalillo County juvenile facility.
Officials say a warrant has been issued for the arrest of a second minor involved in the incident, but he has not been found.
The charges against the teenagers could be changed now that Roper is dead. The decision on the updated fee will be made on Wednesday.
According to the report, Roper was talking with one of the miners and tried to take a cell phone from him.
The miners said Roper pushed one of them and started to walk away quickly.
They all followed Roper then started kicking Roper several times, in the head while Roper was on the ground.
The minors aged 15 to 17 fled and someone called the ambulance.
Roper was unconscious when the medical team arrived.
Authorities interviewed four of the five minors. Investigators believe three minors may have hit Roper during the incident, although there are defense allegations.
