DURBAN: According to private security firm Marshall Security, their emergency dispatch center was alerted through a WhatsApp community group that a driver had his cell phone stolen around 7 p.m. last night.
Marshall Security spokesman Tyron Powell said it was later established that the driver picked up a customer in the Durban region.
Powell said that while driving to the specified address in the Ballito area, the customer requested to be dropped off on a road away from their destination.
He said when the customer got out of the vehicle, the customer snatched the e-hailing driver’s cell phone and fled, without paying for the trip.
“After further investigation and in collaboration with other security officers in the area, the suspect was eventually found and apprehended at a residence on Elizabeth Road, Ballito.
“The suspect was found with the stolen cell phone in his possession. However, the email driver was unwilling to open a case after the suspect returned his cell phone and the suspect’s wife paid the price, ”said Powell.
In a separate incident earlier this weekend, an email driver was the victim of an attempted hijacking on Friday morning.
Powell said the incident took place in Manilla Place in Umgeni Park where the driver was approached by three armed suspects, who attempted to hijack him from his white VW Polo.
“The driver resisted and managed to deter the hijackers, however, the vehicle was unfortunately damaged in the incident,” he said.
He added that the suspects fled on foot to a nearby informal settlement.
“A search was conducted for the wanted suspects who unfortunately escaped arrest,” Powell added.
