TOWNSHIP OF MINDEN HILLS – Members of the Haliburton Highlands Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a fatal collision with a single off-road vehicle (ORV).

On September 26, 2021 at approximately 6:04 p.m., officers from the Ontario Provincial Police from Haliburton Highlands, along with Haliburton County Paramedics and the Township of Minden Hills Fire Department, responded to a single vehicle collision involving an ORV on County Road 121. As in the aftermath of the collision, the lone rider was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. The deceased has been identified as Tom White, 45, of Fergus, Ont.

County Road 121 to Rice Road was temporarily closed while Collision Technical Investigation (TCI) officers attended the scene for further investigation.

Due to the increase in the number of ORVs at this time of year, officers remind drivers to exercise caution and obey laws designed to ensure your safety when operating any type of ORV. The Ontario Provincial Police are also calling on the public to join them in reducing the growing number of incidents involving all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) or ORVs.

Always be prepared for the unexpected. Pack a tool kit, first aid supplies, tow rope, flashlight, tire repair kit, high energy food, and a cell phone. Also take a map, compass or GPS device and know how to use it.

Make it a priority:
• Always wear an approved helmet that is comfortable, properly fitted and closed.
• Never drink and ride
• Ride with others – never alone
• Take a safety course and get to know your gear
• Stay in control and ride according to your skill level
• Know your responsibilities wherever you ride
• Let someone know about your travel plans or activities
