However, several companies have been working on their own quantum computers and have also questioned the progress Google claims to have made. Quantum computing operates in qubits or quantum bits instead of normal bits and it has the ability to exponentially increase the amount of information that can be processed, achieving much faster processing speeds. According to Google, this additional processing power would be useful in the precise simulation of molecules and therefore nature, which would allow companies to create more carbon-efficient fertilizers, design better batteries, or even develop more targeted drugs. .

But even though Google has said it has achieved quantum supremacy, it still has a long way to go before it can build a useful quantum computer, the Mountain View-based company said. This is especially true because today’s quantum computers are made up of less than 100 qubits and Google aims to create one with a whopping 10,000,000 qubits. This would be done in a multi-step process, the first of which would be to minimize errors made by qubits.
