Launch Code offers a free computer programming course

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tech jobs are in high demand, and a Kansas City nonprofit is looking to teach computer programming for free.

Launch Code 101 is a completely free introductory program that teaches students professional skills using coding languages ​​such as JavaScript and Spring Boot.

The program lasts six months and takes place virtually.

Jessi Wilcox is Launch Code’s Vice President of Impact. She said applicants do not need to have a college degree or a background in technology to apply.

“We don’t believe that credentials trump talent and skills, so we’re working with employers behind the scenes to tell them that the kind of credential blockers they’re putting in place as a barrier to ‘Entry into the tech industry is part of the reason there’s such a huge gap in available tech talent,’ she said.

Classes are designed to be flexible, with classes on Mondays and Thursdays from 6-9pm.

Zoe Richardson graduated from Launch Code and now works as a software engineer. She decided to apply for Launch Code after initially working as a graphic designer.

“It’s an incredibly wonderful program,” she says. “I just hope other people, especially women in tech, will join in and give it a shot.”
