Mobile phone batch opens at Corpus Christi International Airport
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Visitors to Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA) will soon have a new option available when waiting for arriving passengers. At Thursday July 1, CCIA will open the very first fleet of mobile phones just north of the main terminal and commercial parking lot.
A cell phone lot is a designated area for parking and waiting for arriving passengers. Once passengers have landed, collected their luggage, and made their way to the sidewalk, they can call or text their driver to come and pick them up.
“This is the first phase of our cell phone batch plan,” said Kevin Smith, director of aviation at the CCIA. “Our intention is to build a new batch of larger cell phones over the next two years that will accommodate more vehicles,” Smith said. “Customers have asked for it and while a longer-term, more permanent solution will come later, it will at least give visitors an option for the summer months, which currently seem very busy,” Smith said.
There are few costs associated with converting this area into a cell phone batch. Once open on July 1, drivers heading to the terminal on International Drive will see a blue sign on the left near the parking lot building. When leaving the parking lot to pick up a waiting passenger, drivers can simply head north a few hundred yards and turn around to return to the terminal. If you find that the cell parking lot is full, remember that you can park for free for 20 minutes in the short-term parking lot.
Stay tuned for more parking improvements at CCIA coming this month. By the end of June, the CCIA will install “pay on foot” machines in the baggage claim area and on the sidewalk so that passengers can pay for their parking before even getting into their vehicles. This will make exiting the parking lot faster.
