Police arrest ‘armed gang’, recover cell phone and toy gun [Look]
Police rushed to a gang of “armed” thieves who held up a pedestrian with a toy gun in Umbilo and stole his cell phone on Wednesday.
SAPS spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala said police responded to the scene of the theft at Marshall Road in Umbilo at around 2 p.m.
“The victim alleged that he was walking on Marshall Road when a vehicle pulled up beside him. Three men got out and pointed a gun at him, ”Gwala said.
Gwala said the men then seized his cell phone and fled the scene in their vehicle. She said a description of the suspects’ vehicle was then distributed to officers from police stations around town.
“The suspect’s vehicle was spotted by Umlazi police officers driving on Himalaya Road towards Lamontville. The vehicle was stopped and three suspects between the ages of 21 and 24 were arrested, ”Gwala said.
“A toy gun was found in the possession of the suspect. The victim’s cell phone was also recovered. The suspects will appear in court soon for theft, ”Gwala said.
Gwala said in a separate incident, police seized two unlicensed firearms and arrested two suspects on farms in Nongoma during a specialized overnight operation on Wednesday.
“Ulundi Public Order and Ulundi Criminal Intelligence Police conducted an intelligence-led operation in Nongoma. The team was tracking reports of suspects in illegal possession of firearms, ”Gwala said.
“The operation took place from last night until this morning. The team visited a farm in the Mayeni region where a 42-year-old man was found in possession of a pistol, ”she said.
“The team then went to the Sigubudu region in Nongoma where a 60-year-old man was found on his farm. A search was carried out and he was found in illegal possession of a pistol with four cartridges. The two suspects were placed under arrest for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, ”Gwala said.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in Nongoma Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
