The suspects were about to rob a cell phone store
A gang of armed thieves posing as customers pushing a cart were surprised to find police were on them when officers pounced on them at a cell phone store in a Durban mall this week.
It was thanks to a vigilant buyer who spotted their suspicious behavior of the gunmen and called the police to the scene that the crime was thwarted.
KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala said police responded to a complaint about an attempted corporate theft at City View Mall in Stamford Hill around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
“The Durban Central Response Team responded to a complaint of attempted corporate theft at the City View shopping center. Upon their arrival, the police arrested three suspects aged between 26 and 30 for possession of a firearm and unauthorized ammunition, ”Gwala said.
“It is alleged that three unknown men entered the cell phone store in City View where they impersonated customers with a cart,” Gwala said.
“Careful observation of the only customer who noticed the suspicious men, left the store and called the police who avoided possible business theft. The police reacted quickly and with the help of security guards arrested three suspects inside a cell phone store, ”Gwala said.
The suspects were unaware their luck had run out and were shocked to see the police in the store.
Gwala said police searched the suspects and found them in possession of a pistol, magazine and 38 rounds.
“The suspects must appear in Durban Magistrates’ Court for possession of unauthorized firearms and ammunition. They will also be profiled to check if they are related to other business flights that have taken place around the CBD of Durban and surrounding areas, ”said Gwala,
Gwala added that the gunmen’s gun would be sent for ballistic tests to verify if it was used for commit any other crime in the country.
